FREEDOM
“Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down
to a job description, careless in the care of God. And
you count far more to him than birds.”
—Matthew 6:26
Jesus said, “If you stick with this, living out what I tell
you, you are my disciples for sure. Then you will experience
for yourselves the truth, and the truth will free
you.”—John 8:31-32
“If the Son sets you free, you are free through and
through.”—John 8:36
Sin can’t tell you how to live. After all, you’re not living
under that old tyranny any longer. You’re living in the
freedom of God. So, since we’re out from under the old tyranny,
does that mean we can live any old way we want? Since
we’re free in the freedom of God, can we do anything
that comes to mind? Hardly. You know well enough
from your own experience that there are some acts of
so-called freedom that destroy freedom. Offer yourselves
to sin, for instance, and it’s your last free act. But
offer yourselves to the ways of God and the freedom
never quits.—Romans 6:14-16
Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end;
attention to God leads us out into the open, into a
spacious, free life.—Romans 8:6
Even though I am free of the demands and expectations
of everyone, I have voluntarily become a servant to any
and all in order to reach a wide range of people.
—1 Corinthians 9:19
Don’t be callous in your exercise of freedom, thoughtlessly
stepping on the toes of those who aren’t as free as
you are.—1 Corinthians 10:32
Is it not clear to you that to go back to that old rulekeeping,
peer-pleasing religion would be an abandonment
of everything personal and free in my relationship
with God? I refuse to do that, to repudiate God’s grace.
If a living relationship with God could come by rule
keeping, then Christ died unnecessarily.—Galatians 2:21
Christ has set us free to live a free life. So take your
stand! Never again let anyone put a harness of slavery
on you.—Galatians 5:1
It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free
life. Just make sure that you don’t use this freedom as
an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy
your freedom. Rather, use your freedom to serve one
another in love; that’s how freedom grows. For everything
we know about God’s Word is summed up in a
single sentence: Love others as you love yourself. That’s
an act of true freedom. If you bite and ravage each
other, watch out—in no time at all you will be annihilating
each other, and where will your precious freedom
be then?—Galatians 5:13-15
Can’t you see the central issue in all this? It is not what
you and I do. It is what God is doing, and he is creating
something totally new, a free life!—Galatians 6:15
Whoever catches a glimpse of the revealed counsel of
God—the free life!—even out of the corner of his eye,
and sticks with it, is no distracted scatterbrain but a
man or woman of action. That person will find delight
and affirmation in the action.—James 1:25
Then you’ll be able to live out your days free to pursue
what God wants instead of being tyrannized by what
you want.—1 Peter 4:2
Live carefree before God; he is most careful with
you.—1 Peter 5:7
