Discipline
Don’t, dear friend, resent God’s discipline; don’t sulk
under his loving correction. It’s the child he loves that
God corrects.—Proverbs 3:11-12
If you love learning, you love the discipline that goes
with it—how shortsighted to refuse correction!
—Proverbs 12:1
A good thrashing purges evil; punishment goes deep
within us.—Proverbs 20:30
For people who hate discipline and only get more stubborn,
there’ll come a day when life tumbles in and they
break—but by then it’ll be too late to help them.
—Proverbs 29:1
“You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes
persecution. The persecution drives you even
deeper into God’s kingdom.”—Matthew 5:10
Examine your motives, test your heart.—1 Corinthians 11:28
Live creatively, friends. If someone falls into sin, forgivingly
restore him, saving your critical comments for
yourself. You might be needing forgiveness before the
day’s out.—Galatians 6:1
God is educating you; that’s why you must never drop
out. He’s treating you as dear children. This trouble
you’re in isn’t punishment; it’s training, the normal
experience of children. Only irresponsible parents leave
children to fend for themselves. Would you prefer an
irresponsible God? We respect our own parents for training
and not spoiling us, so why not embrace God’s training
so we can truly live? While we were children, our
parents did what seemed best to them. But God is doing
what is best for us, training us to live God’s holy best.
A t the time, discipline isn’t much fun. It always
feels like it’s going against the grain. Later, of course, it
pays off handsomely, for it’s the well-trained who find
themselves mature in their relationship with God.
—Hebrews 12:7-11
What counts is that you put up with it for God’s sake
when you’re treated badly for no good reason. There’s
no particular virtue in accepting punishment that you
well deserve. But if you’re treated badly for good behavior
and continue in spite of it to be a good servant, that
is what counts with God.—1 Peter 2:19-20
